The Companion YouTube channel recently premiered a live stream that featured a full hour-long conversation with SG-1 Stargate co-creator and writer Brad Wright and Richard Dean Anderson, who played Jack O’Neill in stargate. The live broadcast was a real treat for Stargate fans and included a lot of interesting tidbits, including the fact that Brad Wright is planning introducing a new kind of Stargate if a fourth series in the franchise is given the go-ahead.
The concept that Wright dreamed up is a Stargate built entirely by humans. Describing how the gate would activate, Wright said that he “turned like crazy and then…” quickly locked each chevron in place to establish a wormhole. This would be a huge shakeup for the Stargate series, as all previous Stargates were found, left behind by a race known as the ancients. It appears that in this modern version of the Stargate, humans have learned to reverse-engineer transportation technology and have begun to develop gates of their own. It would be interesting to see how these gates work as opposed to the other types of gates that have been introduced in the previous series.
Of course, the introduction of a new type of Stargate has been a trend the live action series has been following for years. Each of the three live-action series has featured its own version, with different layouts and slightly different methods of operation. The classic red and gray gates of the Milky Way worked in an analog fashion, with the locations to be marked via a wheel device or by connecting the chevrons with a supercomputer. the doors of atlantis stargate it introduced a slightly more high-tech version of the Stargate, with a digital interface that saw the waypoints illuminate the chevrons, instead of having to turn the rings to lock the waypoints. star gate universe it introduced a kind of steampunk version that looked even older than the original gates to the Milky Way, as it released a huge amount of steam after completing the process of opening a wormhole.
One thing’s for sure, fans probably won’t care too much what the Stargates look like, as long as they get a new series sooner rather than later. Brad Wright has previously spoken about potentially piloting him for a fourth Stargate series, mentioning that fan-favorite characters like General Samantha Carter (amandatapping), Dr. Daniel Jackson (Michael Shanks) and Cameron Mitchell (Ben Browder) had cameo appearances in the script. He also revealed that Stargate technology had become public knowledge today.
While the pilot script for the fourth series sounds promising, it seems like it’s in purgatory at the moment. Wright finished the pilot script in 2020 and COVID shut down most aspects of the film and television industry. Development was halted when MGM began negotiating its sale to Amazon. With the Amazon and MGM deal now complete, hopefully they will look to revise Wright’s script and greenlight series four. Although there are no guarantees that we will get the series, the popularity of the Stargate franchise may be enough to convince Amazon and MGM to make something happen in the future. Wright himself expressed hope for him on Twitter as he celebrated the 25th anniversary of SG-1 StargateSo keep your fingers crossed!
