It is no secret the success of Isom Campaign #1 by Eric July has upset many professionals in the mainstream comics industry. With over $3.2 million raised for his first comic, Rippa has surpassed what most Marvel and DC employees will earn in their lifetimes.
Now Marvel artist Mark Brooks has filed a plea on Twitter to ban Isom #1 colorist Gabe Eltaeb from future San Diego Comic-Con events.

Mark Brooks is an artist relegated to working on a few covers in recent years, with 3D renderings not suited to sequential production work at a reasonable pace. He has spent countless hours tweeting about his hatred of independent creators at ComicsGate, slandering the group “Alt-Right Conmen” for their courageous act of telling major publishers that they will not submit to the awakening agenda in his books.
Brooks has spent the last year and a half harassing the creators of ComicsGate, including Cyberfrog creator Ethan Van Sciver regarding who has done many passive-aggressive tweets. Brooks once told an audience of him, βHe needs you until you’re exhausted and then he either discards you or turns on you. Look at my words, he that day he comes over.β
βI know that Ethan and his lackeys have tried to convince you that I am a bogeyman who wants to destroy comics. The truth is that Ethan is trying to do that,β he added.

He has also tweeted criticizing a Cyberfrog: Rekt Planet cover drawn by Dale Keown saying it “has no focus”, stating, “It’s rendered within an inch of its life, and I can’t tell you what the hell is going on.” This drew criticism from fans and other professionals who pointed out that it is Brooks’ art that does not have a focal point in his work.

Hundreds of people have commented on Brooks’ weird obsession with #ComicsGate, but in his multi-tweet tirade against Gabe Eltaeb, the Marvel artist acts like he was attacked out of the blue. He also unsubstantiatedly implies that Eltaeb is not only dangerous, but also a potential violent threat.

In the nearly 800-word tirade, Mark Brooks paints himself as a victim, without saying how he has pushed and goaded #ComicsGate creators, even small creators like Lord Finatra, a musician with just over 500 subscribers on YouTubewho has been talking about doing a lewd Cyberfrog parody book called “RoboChode”.
Brooks threatened to copyright the RoboChode property in a Discord message. He told Finatra, “You weren’t very smart with RoboChode… For $187, I got the copyright to the name and image in 20 minutes.” While harassing Finatra, Brooks further criticized the YouTuber when he claimed to have offered her a helping hand.

With Eltaeb, Brooks reacted to an image the creator of Truth, Justice, and the American Way posted where he can be seen posing in front of Brooks’ shared booth at SDCC while Brooks was not there. At the time, Eltaeb wrote, βCouldn’t find little Marky. Maybe tomorrow ???” including the #comicsgate and sharing the respective photo of the stand.
Brooks took it as a threat and claimed that he contacted security at the event.

It’s not clear why he assumed a longtime industry professional dropping by to say hello posed a threat. Some fans have noted that Mark Brooks is Caucasian and Eltaeb is Hispanic, so there may be some level of racial bias at play.
Brooks ranted further saying, βI hope this is the end of it, but I’m also worried about future convention appearances. This person does not seem stable. If you attend a convention as an attendee or guest, I will not be there.”

This statement marks an implied threat that San Diego Comic-Con must ban the long-time industry professional with no history of violence from attending, or Mark Brooks will attempt to damage his event.
However, he did not stop in his attempt to harass Eltaeb outside of the conventions, further stating that he is spreading the same threat to all the conventions he attends.
βI am alerting all my convention contacts that this will be the case from now on. If this person has harassed you or tried to intimidate you, I advise you to do the same. And document EVERYTHING,β Brooks continued.
Conservative creators like Eltaeb they have to deal with this kind of harassment on a regular basis because they have positioned themselves politically against a mob, very much alive within the industry, that wants all dissent to be destroyed. With Rippa and ComicsGate making far more money on their campaigns than these Marvel/DC artists, it’s become an embarrassment for major publications, causing artists like Brooks to lash out with unhinged statements.
We’ve seen similar attempts in the past with conventions upsetting creators like Richard C. Meyer, Mike S. Miller, and Larry Correia, among others.
Conventions must stand firm against intimidation of creatives because of their religion or political affiliation. There is no place in conventions for bullies like Brooks who can’t handle being in the same space as other Americans believe and vote differently than they do. Comics are for everyone.
