That is trey lanceThe first training camp as a starting quarterback in the NFL. He spent the last season as a substitute for Jimmy Garoppolo, starting only two games during his rookie campaign. The San Francisco 49ers continue to seek a trade for Garoppolo, leaving Lance as the undisputed QB1 in Santa Clara.
NFL quarterback turned NFL Network analyst Kurt Warner recently visited a practice and got his first look at the 22-year-old quarterback. He offered an evaluation during Rich Eisen to show.
“Great kid,” Warner told Eisen. “I had never met him before. I had heard some great things. It was great talking to him both on and off camera. Talking to everyone in the organization, [they are] very excited to have him as their leader. Not a hit on Jimmy at all. They simply love the child and say they have seen the progress.
“Talk to guys like George Kittle, saying it’s been fun to watch the growth and see it improve. And so they are excited about what it can bring to the table. Looking at the second day of practice, I’d say the defense won the battle against Trey more than Trey did, but that’s also common early in training camp, that defense is ahead of offense, especially with a young guy. who has not played. much.”
Lance acknowledges that his recent outings haven’t been remarkable and he’s eager to see how he and the offense respond. As Warner noted, expect some growing pains, given Lance’s lack of experience.
“There will always be ups and downs,” Lance told CBS Sports HQ after Friday’s practice. “I’m a little bit more worried, at the moment, about how we respond. I thought today was a little sloppy, for sure, on my part, but we’re going to continue to improve. It’s only Day 3, so we’ve got a lot of work to do.”
Teammates and coaches were quick to praise Lance as the team transitions from Garoppolo. The young quarterback has taken on his new role very well.
“But just like his demeanor, I loved everything he had to say, the way he worked,” Warner shared, “and I loved what he heard from everyone there. Collectively, [they are] very excited for the season. Now, it will be exciting to see where he is in the second year.”
What is the biggest challenge for Lance in his second season in the NFL? Warner reflected on his own journey to the NFL, acknowledging his lack of college experience but crediting the situations he faced in the Arena Football League and Europe.
Lance only had one full season as a starter at North Dakota State. That was in 2019.
“I would say his biggest challenge is being able to handle the different situations that he’s going to face,” Warner explained, “… how he handles those things that he really hasn’t dealt with much in his career because he hasn’t played much football. So I think being able to handle and handle the pressure of those situations is going to be the biggest challenge for him.”
San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans and quarterbacks Trey Lance and Nate Sudfeld spoke to reporters after Thursday’s practice, the second of training camp. Here is everything they had to say. Transcript provided by San Francisco 49ers communications staff. Did today feel like a good day for defense? “Today was good for the defense, just the energy that all of our guys brought to it, the way they worked together as a unit. The day that we had today was really good. I love seeing guys excited, happy to play.” football, have fun with it and that’s what you saw today.” The DBs had a sequence there where, like each other, their ringside guys,
Wednesday marked the start of 49ers training camp, where the scent of football was in the air again for the first time in 40 days. Quarterback Trey Lance was seen warming up with the quarterback room, working with quarterbacks coach Brian Griese. #49ers QB1
San Francisco 49ers kicker Robbie Gould recently expressed confidence in second-year player Trey Lance as the team’s starting quarterback in 2022. “He’s a lot more mature than people think and/or knows,” Gould told NBC Sports Bay Area. “…And I think you’ll see Trey Lance take the helm and be ready and more prepared.” Star linebacker Fred Warner is just as confident in Lance running the 49ers’ offense next season, even though the quarterback is only 22 and lacks significant experience. Some doubt his readiness to lead the storied franchise. “I keep saying, man, how much I’ve admired the way Trey has taken
It’s tempting to take the first two days of 49ers training camp as a clue as to who will win the competitions for the team’s vacant right guard and nickel cornerback spots, but 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan says it’s too early in the process to come up with anything definitive. Veteran Darqueze Dennard has been earning first-team reps at the nickel spot, while rookie fourth-round pick Spencer Burford has been with the first team at right guard. Shanahan spoke about Burford before Friday’s practice, saying the Texas-San Antonio product has adapted well to the NFL in its short time in the league, but still has a long way to go before cementing a starting job. “He has a chance,” Shanahan said of Burford. “I think several guys have a chance. But
