  • Gesture control could be improved and expanded

After the last few years, it’s safe to say that most people have been exposed to the horrors inherent in the average webcam. Even the ones found in expensive high-end laptops tend to be merely functional at best. Even upgrading to a separate, dedicated webcam really only gives you a marginal improvement.

Insta360, the company known for its laptops action cameras and VR cameras, has officially entered the world of webcams to offer a solution. Insta360 Link is much more than just another 4K webcam. There’s no question it’s expensive, but for those looking for the best webcam setup, this little camera’s exceptional image quality and innovative gimbal mount may be what you’ve always been waiting for.

The Insta360 Link is a very compact device, not dissimilar in form factor to many other external webcams. Its design is strikingly similar to all-in-one camera gimbal systems that have gained popularity for their ability to capture smooth cinematic sequences.

The camera and gimbal sit on a rectangular base that features a USB-C port, a touch-sensitive panel, a standardized camera screw mount, and a padded clip mounting system.

This mounting system is notable because it allows the Link to be easily attached to the top of almost any screen. It is remarkably secure, but requires little effort to operate. Combined with the screw mount, the Link can be placed virtually anywhere you need it. I tested the Link with two separate mounting accessories provided by Insta360: a miniature Pygtech tripod with an extendable center column, as well as a prehensile arm that clamps onto tables and desks.

In terms of build quality, the Link is well made and quite sturdy. It is a device that seems built to last. However, I would prefer it to come with some kind of carrying case as it is a bit awkward to carry around due to the mobile gimbal design.

image quality

Typical webcams are the saddest and most boring devices you can imagine. The built-in webcams are awful, offering abysmal image quality in good light and almost unusable mush indoors in low light. Alternatively, you can set up a camera, such as the one nikon z6like a webcam for extremely high video quality, but the trade-off is a bulky, awkward, and expensive setup.

That’s what makes Insta360 Link stand alone so right. Link offers a high degree of image quality in a convenient, lightweight form factor. Plus, thanks to its built-in AI and motorized gimbal, it potentially overcomes the limitations of a static camera.

It’s really impressive how good the photos and videos of the Link look.

Capable of 4K video at 30fps (frames per second), the Insta360 Link is already way beyond the typical webcam in terms of resolution alone, especially when we’re talking about webcams built into laptops. There is certainly a solid selection of 4K webcams out there, like the Logitech Brio, the Dell UltraSharp webcam, or the Lumina 4K.

But we all know that resolution is just a number. What’s really impressive is how good the photos and video it captures look.

Details are sharp, color is excellent, and it even offers a certain amount of decent-looking bokeh. Even in low light, the camera performs surprisingly well, and it truly outperforms any other webcam I’ve ever used.

This is due in part to the relatively large Β½-inch sensor, which is much larger than the average webcam sensor, or even the sensors in many smartphones and compact cameras.

Were it not connected via USB-C, the Insta360 Link would be an above-average option for photography and videography in general. HDR is also available, which is particularly useful in high-contrast situations.

Performance

The three available gesture controls allow you to control the camera without having to leave the frame. Available gestures include raising your palm flat to start and stop tracking, making a V with your fingers to enter whiteboard mode, and pointing up with your thumb to the side, then raising your hand up and down to digitally zoom in and out. outside.

The first two gestures work fine, but the zoom control suffers from unreliable detection. With practice, I was able to learn to make it work more reliably; you should keep your palm very flat towards the camera and place your fingers in the correct position while keeping a wide distance between you and the camera. I wish there were some additional gesture controls to further expand the possibilities of the camera, but maybe that’s something that may come up in the future.

Subject tracking is remarkably effective, as is the autofocus system.

Of course, the gimbal allows the camera to follow you around the room. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a webcam mounted on an AI-powered gimbal. Subject tracking is remarkably effective, as is the autofocus system, and the camera was able to consistently track me as I moved around a room. Whiteboard mode tracks four included decals and isolates the area within those decals, correcting the image so that it is flat and square and the whiteboard fills the frame.

For example, if you are teaching a class, you can have the camera shoot you in wide angle next to the whiteboard and by making the appropriate gesture, it will switch to whiteboard mode and zoom in on the predefined area. This makes Link a perfect tool for teaching online classes or making business presentations.

It is worth mentioning that cameras like the tiny obsbot do something pretty similar, though its image quality is nowhere near what Link can do.

Insta360 Link also features a handy desktop view mode, aerial view mode, and portrait mode, all of which combine to further increase the camera’s versatility.

You will definitely want to install the Insta360 Link Controller software on your computer. This allows you to fine-tune various settings, switch modes, update firmware, adjust camera parameters, and control camera movement via an on-screen joystick.

The software can be used to record on its own or as a taskbar overlaid on top of other streaming and recording applications. It has a very elegant design and is quite intuitive to use.

While I initially experienced stability issues due to the firmware preview, by the time I finished testing the Link for this review, those issues had been fixed.

The only other areas of concern worth mentioning are thermal issues. The camera tends to get quite hot during use, and it doesn’t take long either. The Link heats up pretty quickly, to the point that after ten or more minutes of constant filming, the temperature becomes a bit of a concern.

However, it never got hot enough to worry me from a safety standpoint, but it did get hot enough that it wasn’t healthy for your electronics. On the plus side, I didn’t notice that the Link’s performance was directly affected by the increased heat. When in standby mode, the Link feels slightly warm to the touch.

audio quality

In terms of audio quality, the Link’s built-in microphones offer decent voice capture capabilities. Noise cancellation allowed me to record in outdoor environments with a lot of ambient noise, or next to a noisy desktop gaming rig without any fan whirring in the video.

The recording quality itself isn’t up to par with a high-end dedicated mic, but I never expected it to be. For what it is, I was surprised at how good the quality was.

Price and availability

Insta360 Link is now available for $300. While this is definitely a premium price point for a webcam, it feels reasonable for such an advanced device.

our take

The Insta360 Link is the best webcam available today, though those who spend less and don’t need a robotic gimbal are better off with a simpler, cheaper webcam. For what it tries to be, the Link excels on almost every level, delivering a high level of convenience, while also rivaling bulky and expensive camera gear in terms of quality.

There is great potential here for a wide range of applications and use cases – the options seem limitless. Who knew a webcam could be so cool?

Is there a better alternative?

In terms of features and image quality, the Insta360 Link is virtually unmatched. However, it is also one of the most expensive webcams you can buy.

the Logitech Brio 4K it’s a popular option that offers that crisp 4K resolution for $100 less than the Insta360 Link.

the tiny obsbot it is another concept of camera connected to the gimbal. It’s also $100 less than the Insta360 Link, but it only has 1080p resolution.

How long will it last?

I am quite confident in the build quality of the Link and believe it will last for many years. Moving parts could perhaps inhibit potential longevity compared to a static webcam, but whether or not this difference in longevity would be significant, if any, is difficult to determine. I would expect to spend at least five to 10 years with Link, given my experience with similar technology. For example, I have been using a drone with a comparable gimbal for five years and it still works fine.

Should you buy it?

Yes. If you regularly use a webcam for education, business, live streaming, or simple communication with friends and family, I highly recommend you consider Insta360 Link. Even if you’re not in the market for a webcam, Link has significant value as an automated camera operator for an easier way to record video content.
