DLNR Press Release: HAWAI’I WILDLIFE CONSERVATION STAMP CONTEST OPENS

Posted on November 22, 2021 in Latest news from the department, Press room

(Honolulu) – Artists can submit works to DLNR’s Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) in the annual art contest depicting two local wildlife species for the Hawaii Wildlife and Game Bird Conservation Seal 2022-23.

The Wildlife Conservation Seal is a requirement for state of Hawaii hunting licenses. The game bird stamp is required for anyone who intends to hunt game birds. Both stamps will be available to stamp collectors.

Theme of this year’s stamps

Game bird seal- Chukar PArtridge (Alectoris chukar) (occurs on all major Hawaiian Islands) was introduced to Hawaii in 1923. It is native to Asia and Eastern Europe, from Israel to Nepal. They are about 14 inches long and have a grayish-brown back with the sides streaked with black and white feathers. His face is white with a black band across the eyes to the neck. They are a dominant component of the avifauna in high-elevation scrub and may have filled a niche occupied by now-extinct or rare birds. The role of exotic birds in facilitating seed dispersal and germination of native plant species has been found to be beneficial in restoring degraded ecosystems.

Wildlife Conservation Stamp-ʻmeiwi (Vestiaria coccinea) are federally listed as threatened statewide. Adults have vibrant red plumage with black wings and tail, and a curved salmon-colored bill. Juvenile is buff with black spots, shorter dark bill turning yellow then salmon with age. Feeds primarily on ʻōhiʻa nectar, but also visits tubular flowers of understory plants such as ʻakala and lobelias and captures insects.
